Cultural heritage of Budapest

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is increasingly popular among tourists and visitors. Budapest has not only become a trendy tourist destination, but in 2019 it was awarded one of the best destinations in Europe. The city offers many cultural and wonderful sights to its visitors. You can get to know the green Buda side or the bubbly Pest side, but one thing is for sure: a fantastic panorama opens before our eyes from the banks of the Danube, whichever side you choose. The banks of the Danube was the first to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by the Buda Castle District and the historic surroundings of Andrássy Avenue. Budapest is much more than a party city or a cheap destination for party tourism. It offers fantastic cultural programs and a gastronomic experience – and all at an affordable price. Have a look at our recommended guides for more detailed tour options.

THE BANKS OF THE DANUBE

The banks of the Danube offers a fantastic view from either the Pest or the Buda side to the other side, but if you admire the view from the bridges, it also provides an unparalleled experience. The world heritage site extends from the Margit Bridge to the Freedom Bridge, on the Buda side the entire Buda Castle, Gellért Hill with the citadel and the Freedom Statue, and the Gellért Baths. On the Pest side, there are fantastic masterpieces of architecture, such as the Parliament, the headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Gresham Palace and the Vigadó building in Pest. Budapest abounds in architectural masterpieces on both sides of the Danube.

BUDA CASTLE DISTRICT

The Buda Castle District is one of the most impressive sights during a trip to Budapest. It promises several programs and offers a variety of restaurants. Immerse yourself in the wonderful castle quarter surrounded by the castle wall, take a walk in the former kings’ home and visit the 19th-century Neo-Gothic style Matthias Church. Check out the national Széchenyi library or see a fantastic exhibition in the national gallery. Very high-quality and diverse programs are always waiting for you in the castle garden bazaar. Try the Budavári funicular, which is a special railway, one of the means of access to the Budavári Palace in the 1st district of Budapest. If you have enough energy and you are staying in Pest, walk over one of the bridges to Buda, and then walk from Clark Ádám square to the castle, looking out over Pest for a fantastic experience.

ANDRÁSSY AVENUE

Andrássy Avenue was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List because of the wonderful buildings along the road. Examples include the Opera House, designed by Miklós YBL, the Neo-Renaissance Academy of Music, or the Art Nouveau Fashion Hall, as well as Heroes’ Square, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Millennium Monument at the end of Andrássy Avenue. The new ethnographic museum was recently opened and the house of music was handed over, which won several awards in 2019 and in 2020. We can take a trip back in time to Heroes Square on Europe’s first underground railway. At the end of the trip, we can take a fantastic walk in the City Park, visit the castle of Vajdahunyad and see an exhibition in the Agricultural Museum.
